Oct. Sales Higher at BJ's
NATICK, Mass. -- Coffee frozen foods, and meat were among the categories that played a part in the 9.2 percent sales growth reported by BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. here yesterday for October 2007.
Sales for the month at the warehouse club chain were $663.8 million, up from $607.9 million in the year-ago period. Comparable-club sales went up 4.8 percent for the month, including a contribution from gas sales of 1.7 percent and an adverse effect from lack of pharmacy sales of 0.4 percent. Last year the BJ's posted an October comparable-club sales decline of 0.7 percent, including a negative impact from gas sales of 2.5 percent.
For the third quarter ended Nov. 3, total sales rose 8.1 percent to $2.12 billion, and comparable-club sales grew 3.4 percent, including an adverse effect from sales of gas of 0.2 percent and a negative impact from the absence of pharmacy sales vs. last year worth 0.4 percent. For the third quarter ended Oct. 28, 2006, comparable-club sales had increased 0.1 percent, including a negative impact from gas sales of 0.6 percent.
For the first nine months of fiscal 2007, total sales rose 7.6 percent and comparable club sales went up 3.1 percent, including a contribution from gas sales of 0.7 percent and a negative impact from lack of pharmacy sales of 0.4 percent.
According to BJ's, food sales grew about 5 percent for October and 6 percent for the third quarter. General merchandise sales were essentially flat that month and went up about 2 percent for the third quarter.
During October, categories with strong comparable-club sales rises included coffee, dairy, frozen, juices, meat, milk, office supplies, produce, soda and water, and televisions, while apparel, automotive & tools, cigarettes, prerecorded video, residential furniture, and tires were among the weaker categories vs. last year.
BJ's operates 175 clubs in 16 states.
