NuVal Offered on ActiveHealth Website

The NuVal Nutritional Scoring System, which is now available at more than 900 supermarkets across the United States, and ActiveHealth Management, a New York-based provider of evidence-based health information technology solutions and health management services, have formed a partnership to offer online tools aimed at helping ActiveHealth members make informed eating choices.

As of this month, NuVal’s nutrition database of thousands of scored foods is available to the more than 10 million people with access to ActiveHealth’s personal-health website, www.MyActiveHealth.com. ActiveHealth members are the first consumers in the United States to be able to search the system’s database by product name, nutritional attributes and NuVal score. The system’s scores rank the nutritional value of foods on a scale from 1 to 100, with the higher rankings indicating better nutrition. NuVal takes more than 30 separate nutrients and nutrition factors into account when calculating a score.

Consumers using the database can compare scores within a food category, such as cereals, or across categories, such as beef burgers to veggie burgers. Other tools will allow ActiveHealth members to develop personalized shopping lists and meal plans.

ActiveHealth disease management and wellness coaches will additionally have access to the database as a resource for helping people develop better eating habits.

“NuVal scores and the science behind them are an important tool in preventive health care,” noted Mike Nugent, general manager at Braintree, Mass.-based NuVal LLC. “Our collaboration with ActiveHealth will expand access to our nutritional scoring system beyond supermarkets to an online audience. This will give MyActiveHealth users a great new tool, and marks a new industry for NuVal.”

“ActiveHealth works continuously to provide access to information and resources to help our members live healthier lives,” added Greg Steinberg, M.D., president and CEO of ActiveHealth. “A key part of that mission is empowering people to make better decisions. NuVal’s scoring system is scientifically robust, yet very easy to use and understand. It arms our members with nutritional knowledge they can use to make better choices every day.”

A joint effort launched in 2008 by Skokie, Ill.-based Topco Associates and Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn., NuVal can currently be found at Price Chopper, Hy-Vee, Meijer, Brookshire Grocery Co., Big Y, Skogen’s Festival Foods, Food City, Coborn’s, and United Supermarket locations, with more U.S. retail chains slated to roll out the system Additional information is available by contacting [email protected] or (781) 228-5800.
