Nominations Open for Frozen Research Award

The Frozen Food Foundation is accepting nominations for the second annual Frozen Food Foundation Freezing Research Award, presented in conjunction with the International Association for Food Protection.

The award honors an individual, group or organization for preeminence in, and outstanding contributions to, the field of research impacting food safety through freezing. The award recipient will receive a plaque and a $2,000 honorarium sponsored by the Frozen Food Foundation.

“There is a significant body of evidence suggesting that the freezing process may strengthen the safety of foods by inhibiting the growth of potentially harmful microbes,” said Kraig R. Naasz, foundation president. “This award is intended to recognize current noteworthy achievements in freezing research, and ultimately to encourage further enhancements to food safety and quality through new freezing technologies.”

The Frozen Food Foundation Freezing Research Award is the only award given by IAFP specifically for frozen food-related research. Areas of interest may include the environmental impact of various freezing techniques; freezing as a complement to other food preservation techniques; and the ability of the freezing process to kill or destroy certain microorganisms found in food.

The International Association for Food Protection is accepting award nominations through March 1, 2011. Award nomination forms and instructions for submitting nominations can be found online at www.frozenfoodfacts.org and www.foodprotection.org. The award winner will be announced at the 2011 IAFP Annual Meeting, July 31-Aug. 3, 2011, in Milwaukee.

The Frozen Food Foundation is affiliated with the American Frozen Food Institute. Incorporated in 2004, the foundation’s mission is to foster scientific research, public awareness and frozen food industry education for the benefit of the common good.
