More Than 100 Food Lion Stores Earn Energy Star Designation
RALEIGH, N.C. - Food Lion announced today that 101 of its stores have earned the Energy Star designation from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Energy Star label means these Food Lion stores are some of the most energy-efficient retail facilities in the United States.
Kathleen Hogan, director of the EPA's Climate Protection Partnerships Division, which oversees the Energy Star program, toured one of Food Lion's Energy Star stores today in Raleigh, N.C. and spoke with reporters and company leaders. "Food Lion embraces a superior energy management strategy that is a model for all businesses to follow," Hogan said. "I'm pleased to recognize Food Lion for its environmental leadership and to see firsthand how Food Lion is reducing its energy use and costs while protecting the environment."
Food Lion became an Energy Star partner in 1998 and every year since has set and surpassed aggressive energy management goals.
Over the past three years, through new lighting, refrigeration, and heating and cooling technologies, as well as companywide energy management efforts, Food Lion has reduced its energy use by more than 1.2 trillion BTU. In 2003 Food Lion saved 550 billion BTU and cut its natural gas consumption by nearly 9 percent.
In 2002 and 2003 the EPA recognized Food Lion's environmental protection and energy management efforts by naming the company an "Energy Star Partner of the Year." In both years Food Lion was the only supermarket company to receive the honor.
"Food Lion is extremely proud that we now have more than 100 Energy Star stores. We think it's quite an accomplishment," said Kyle Mitchell, Food Lion v.p. of construction and engineering. "Our company goal is to be a world-class leader in energy management in the supermarket industry. Through renovations, new construction, and companywide energy management practices, we will add more Energy Star stores to the Food Lion chain."
The environmental impact of Food Lion's efforts is significant. Based on EPA calculations, each of Food Lion's Energy Star stores saves as much as 86,000 kilowatt hours per year -- enough to power nine American homes for an entire year. The energy savings at each store also prevent 190,920 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year, equal to removing the pollution of 19 cars or planting nearly 26 acres of trees.
Applying these EPA calculations to Food Lion's 2003 energy reductions of 550 billion BTU, Food Lion achieved energy savings equivalent to preventing 404 million pounds of carbon dioxide, taking 40,468 cars off the road, planting 55,435 acres of trees, and powering 18,229 American homes. In just the last two years Food Lion alone has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 674 million pounds.
