Minyards Eyes Mid-summer Opening for Hispanic Flagship

COPPELL, Texas -- Minyard Food Stores, Inc. here expects to debut its new Hispanic-centric Carnival flagship store in mid-summer, s.v.p. of strategy and marketing Poul Heilmann told Progressive Grocer yesterday. The ground-up store, to be located in the Oaklawn section of southwest Dallas, will incorporate the many new ideas Minyards has implemented in four recent Carnival remodels.

The new flagship will place heavy emphasis on peripheral departments, noted Heilmann, including a carniceria, or fresh meat department; seafood department; bakery/deli; fruiteria, featuring fresh fruit and juices; and a cocina, or kitchen, where customers can specialty order prepared foods to take out or eat in.

The format will also feature a brand new décor package designed specifically to accent the store's "fun atmosphere," said Heilmann. "The store will be very colorful and exciting," he said. "We'll have a lot of sampling and great eat-in food."

Meanwhile, the center store aisles will feature a diverse product mix customized for the area's primarily Mexican shoppers, he said.

Minyard Food Stores operates 67 supermarkets, 40 pharmacies, and 15 "On the Go" fuel stations, in six surrounding counties of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Its porfolio includes 24 Minyard, 19 Sack'n Save, and 25 Carnival Food units.
