Lance Cuts Sodium in Sandwich Crackers

Lance Sandwich Crackers, part of the Snyder’s-Lance Inc. family of snack brands, has voluntarily reduced the sodium in multiple SKUs to comply with the National Salt Reduction Initiative guidelines by 2012.

To achieve reduce sodium levels without altering the taste profile of its products, Lance conducted extensive testing to ensure that consumers would not perceive any difference between the current and the new lower-sodium product. Due to consumer perceptions that reduced-sodium products are less flavorful, Lance will not promote the lower sodium levels on its packaging.

“Lance Sandwich Crackers is proud to join in the effort to reduce sodium in the American diet,” said Alvaro Trinidad, Lance Sandwich Crackers senior brand manager. “While participation of brands like Lance and the other Snyder’s-Lance brands is important, a collaborative effort between health organizations and food manufacturers is the best way to improve our nation’s food supply.”

The NSRI is a nationwide effort among 72 local and state health departments and health organizations to work with the food industry to reduce the nation’s salt intake by 20 percent and prevent tens of thousands of deaths each year due to conditions caused by high blood pressure. Currently, 28 leading food manufacturers have joined the NSRI.

Lance also has removed trans fats and high fructose corn syrup from its products, created whole-grain sandwich cracker varieties and all-natural Cracker Creations, and launched reduced-fat and 100-calorie versions of its most popular sandwich crackers.

In March 2011, Snyder’s-Lance Inc. announced that Lance Sandwich Crackers would meet the NSRI standards across several SKUs by 2012. At that time, Snyder’s of Hanover pretzels already met the requirements. Snyder’s-Lance Inc. has also committed to reducing the sodium in its unflavored chips in order to meet NSRI guidelines.

Charlotte, N.C.-based Snyder’s-Lance, Inc. manufactures and markets snack foods throughout the United States and internationally. Its brands include Snyder’s of Hanover, Lance, Krunchers, Cape Cod, EatSmart Naturals, Jays, Grande, Tom’s, Archway, O-Ke-Doke and Stella D’oro.
