King Kullen Opens Energy-efficient Store
BETHPAGE, N.Y -- King Kullen here has opened a new energy-efficient supermarket in the Southgate Shopping Center in Massapequa Park, N.Y. on Long Island. Featuring expanded food and specialty selections, the 51,000-square-foot store is the grocer’s fourth-largest location on Long Island.
"We wanted to create a unique shopping experience for customers, so every aspect of the store was designed with them in mind," said King Kullen v.p. Thomas Cullen in a statement. "With its easy-to-follow layout, free sampling program, and numerous specialty stations, the new store makes shopping easier and more enjoyable. The customer response has been terrific."
Energy-efficient features at the store, which officially opened July 20, include closed-door cases in the dairy and cold beer sections to conserve energy; use of LED lighting which gives off no heat and requires one-third less energy than traditional ballast lighting; and specially manufactured window glass.
The location additionally offers Long Island’s first Boar's Head Sandwich Station, a Wild By Nature Store within the store carrying a full line of organic food items, a cheese island, a mobile demo station, an expanded kosher section, and several specialty stations including Mediterranean, olive, shrimp, and soup bars. King Kullen also makes its own Grab-and-Go home-cooked items on premises, and the store holds daily sampling events from the various departments throughout the store.
All 46 of King Kullen's stores feature energy-efficient components, spokesman Lloyd Singer told Progressive Grocer. Last May the retailer’s partnership with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) earned King Kullen a "Northeast Business Leaders for Energy Efficiency" award from the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP). King Kullen’s participation in LIPA's Commercial Construction Program (CCP) and CEI Retrofit Energy and Capacity Program have allowed the grocer to lower its yearly electricity consumption by between 20 percent and 25 percent, for a total annual savings of over $2 million.
What's more, King Kullen has explored such cutting-edge technologies such as LED lighting in its reach-in display cases, desiccant systems for humidity control, daylighting with skylights, and reflective roofing, in addition to established energy-conserving methods, including liquid refrigerant pumping and high efficient heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems.
A new "Wild By Nature" store, planned for later this year in Oceanside, N.Y., will additionally feature energy-efficient technology. The store, which carries fresh wholesome foods and natural health care products, will be the company’s fourth. All of the stores operating under the Wild By Nature banner are located on Long Island.
Recognized by the Smithsonian as America’s first supermarket, King Kullen employs more than 4,800 people and operates 46 stores and three Wild by Nature stores in Long Island and Staten Island.
