Kellogg Considering Lowering Fat in Cookies

CHICAGO -- Kellogg Co. is considering reformulating some of its products, especially Keebler cookies, to reduce fat content, its chief executive officer told Reuters on Monday.

"We would do the products that have the highest exposure and that contain the highest levels of fat," c.e.o. Carlos Gutierrez said in an interview. "That would lead us potentially toward cookies, because that's probably really the only area where we're looking at higher fat content."

He added that many of Kellogg's other products, including some of its cereals and its cereal bars and other wholesome snacks, already have relatively low levels of fat.

Gutierrez's comments follow similar moves recently announced by Kraft Foods, Inc. Kellogg said that second-quarter cookie sales were soft, in part because consumers are becoming more conscious of unfavorable health trends like rising obesity rates.
