Hypertension is Latest Target of Hiller’s Health Tours

High blood pressure is the latest topic of Hiller’s Health Tours, the Michigan-based grocer’s outreach program, staffed by nutritionists, doctors, food specialists and other medical experts.

“High blood pressure is one of the great silent killers of civilized society,” CEO Jim Hiller said of this month’s focus. “Excess salt is everywhere and as a consequence of it, strokes and heart disease run rampant. Hiller’s is proud to make low- and no-salt items easily available to our customers as a way of coping with this scourge of high blood pressure.”

Mary Nalon, R.D., one of the experts on hand to answer shoppers’ questions, said: “Making good food choices is a key component to dealing with high blood pressure. Research has proven that the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet eating plan can help to lower blood pressure even without decreasing your sodium intake. The DASH diet is designed for the entire family and focuses on a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low-fat or non-fat dairy products.”

The innovative program offers a series of free tours at various Hiller’s locations to highlight the dietary needs and no-nos for people suffering from an array of conditions.

The High Blood Pressure Health Tour will take place at Hiller’s Commerce Township location (39950 W. 14 Mile Road) on Sept. 28.

Founded in 1941, Hiller’s Markets are located in Ann Arbor, Berkley, Commerce, Northville, Plymouth, Union Lake and West Bloomfield, Mich.
