HR360 to Stage Retail Cultural Immersion Tour

The Hispanic Retail 360 Summit 2014 Cultural Immersion Tour will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 10:30 a.m. Buses will depart from the San Antonio Marriott River Center, located at 101 Bowie Street, San Antonio.

Sponsored by Goya Foods, the tour will involve visits to four retail establishments that aggressively target the area’s Latino customers. Company officials will be on hand to discuss strategies and answer questions. According to Geoscape, San Antonio has a population of 2.6 million. Fifty-seven percent are Hispanic; 94 percent of these Hispanics are of Mexican origin. Many are acculturated and bilingual.

Cultural Immersion Tour participants must be registered for the Hispanic Retail 360 Summit, although taking part in the tour is optional. There is an additional pre-registration fee of $119 to participate ($129 on site). The Tour is limited to 150 attendees and is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Good Careers Centers help individuals find employment or explore a new career. They also provide access to financial literacy programs and banking services designed to mitigate predatory lending practices.

The Good Careers Academy offers career training and education to help people start, retain or advance their career. Short-term certification career programs include medical assistant, nurse’s aide, medical coding, pharmacy technician, medical front office, computer support specialist, administrative assistant and commercial driver’s license.

Market Square (El Mercado): 514 W. Commerce Street

San Antonians have been shopping at Market Square since the 1820's, before Texas joined the United States. The first businesses were a pharmacy and a dry goods store. The area also served as a marketplace for produce and other foods, including chili -- made and served by women known as "Chili Queens" -- beginning in the mid 1800s.  Art has always had a place in this vibrant culture center as well. In 2005, Museo Alameda opened as the first formal affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution focusing on Latino art.  Today, Market Square is known for authentic Mexican dining and music enriched with a fascinating legacy of public markets.
