Hannaford Launches Third Annual Anti-hunger Campaign

SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Bros. Co. here has launched its third annual "Have a Heart for Hunger" campaign. The aim of the program, which runs from Feb. 5 until March 4, is to help provide hunger relief to organizations in the five states served by the Northeast regional food retailer.

Customers at the grocer's stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts will be able to help combat hunger in their communities by donating $2 or $5 at checkout, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to area food banks. Since its inception, Have a Heart for Hunger has raised over $185,000 for America's Second Harvest agencies.

"We are proud of our long-standing commitment to fight hunger through the support of this program and food donations of over 8 million pounds each year," said Hannaford public affairs and media relations manager Caren Epstein, in a statement. "This year high energy costs will send more people to emergency food assistance agencies throughout the region. Through Have a Heart for Hunger Hannaford associates and customers will have an opportunity to help agencies meet those increasing demands."

In launching the campaign this year, Hannaford noted kick-off contributions amounting to $5,000. The money will be distributed among 10 participating hunger-relief agencies: the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, the Greater Boston Food Bank, and Worcester County Food Bank in Massachusetts; Good Shepherd Food Bank and Wayside Soup Kitchen in Maine; New Hampshire Food Bank in New Hampshire; Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, and Food Bank of Central New York in New York; and Vermont Foodbank in Vermont.

Employing more than 24,000 associates, Delhaize-owned Hannaford Bros. Co. operates 150 supermarkets and food-and-drug combination stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts under the Hannaford Supermarket and Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy banners.
