Haggen to Debut First Calif., Store on March 11
Haggen is on track to open the first of 100 new grocery stores in California, Arizona and Nevada. Beginning March 11, shoppers in La Costa, Calif., will be the first in the Golden State to shop the new-to-the Pacific Southwest stores under the ownership of the Bellingham, Wash.-based grocer, which will play up organic produce, quality meats and seafood, fresh baked goods and locally sourced specialty products, as well as familiar leading brands and household staples.
As Progressive Grocer previously reported, Haggen's rapid expansion -- from 18 stores with 16 pharmacies to 164 stores with 106 pharmacies; from 2,000 to more than 10,000 employees; and from a small company with locations in Oregon and Washington to a major regional grocery chain with locations in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada and Arizona -- is a result of the FTC-mandated divesture of stores from the Albertsons-Safeway merger that closed in late January.
Between one and 12 stores will be converted each week in California between March-May 2015, as per the schedule outlined below, which is subject to change:
