Giant-Landover Pharmacy Purchases Now Amass Gas Rewards Points

For the first time, pharmacy purchases at Landover, Md.-based Giant Food, LLC can now rack up points for the Ahold USA chain’s “Gas Rewards” program. All purchases made in Giant pharmacies in Washington, Maryland, Virginia (except Charlottesville) and Delaware earn one Gas Rewards point for every dollar spent, allowing customers to further save on gas at participating Shell stations.

“Our Gas Rewards program furthers our commitment to helping our customers stretch their budgets during these difficult economic times,” said Giant director of pharmacy operations Dain Rusk. “This is in addition to other ways Giant pharmacies help our customers, such as providing free antibiotics for 14 days to customers who present prescriptions from their physicians, as well as up to a 90-day supply of the most commonly prescribed generic medications for a guaranteed price of $9.99.”

For every 100 Gas Rewards points earned when shopping at Giant, shoppers can save 10 cents per gallon instantly on their next fuel purchase at over 400 participating Shell stations, up to 35 gallons per purchase. Customers can also redeem points at Giant gas stations. The points are redeemed by swiping a Giant card, or manually entering the card number or alternate ID at the pump, instantly initiating the discount.

Under the expanded program, a $20 pharmaceutical co-pay earns customers 20 points, while a $50 pharmacy purchase amasses 50 points, enabling shoppers to accumulate points more quickly. Giant pharmacy customers present their Giant cards to the pharmacy associate when picking up prescriptions to gain the points automatically.

Gas Rewards points both from grocery and pharmacy payments will be added automatically to a customer’s Giant card and be recorded on his or her receipt and at the pump. Additionally, customers can visit “My Giant” section at www.GiantFood.com to check how many Gas Rewards points they have earned.

Giant operates 180 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, and employs about 22,000 associates. Included within the 180 stores are 163 full-service pharmacies.

In related news, Shell and Kroger are expanding their exclusive alliance to continue helping customers save at the pump in multiple cities around the country by using their Kroger Plus Card or other Kroger family of brand store loyalty card. Beginning today, customers of Cincinnati-based Kroger in multiple states from Virginia to Arkansas can save money on their grocery bill and earn Fuel Points that can be used at the pump.

New markets include Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Richmond, Va.; Indianapolis; Ft. Wayne, Ind.; South Bend, Ind.; Champaign, Ill.; Little Rock Ark.; and Jackson, Miss. Customers in the participating markets can save 10 cents per gallon for every 100 Fuel Points earned at Kroger family of brand stores, including Jay C, Scott’s and Owen’s supermarkets, when they use their loyalty cards, and will be able to redeem their Fuel Points exclusively at participating Shell stations and Kroger Fuel Centers, up to 35 gallons per fuel purchase. In Richmond only, customers may also redeem up to 1,000 Fuel Points per visit to save up to $1per gallon at Kroger Fuel Centers, up to 35 gallons per fuel purchase.

Shell, based in Houston, and Kroger have previously introduced similar alliances in other cities around the country, including San Diego; Knoxville and Nashville, Tenn.; Dayton, Ohio; Cincinnati; Detroit; and Lansing, Flint and Saginaw, Mich.
