Giant-Landover Marking Earth Day With Riverside Cleanup

For the second year in a row, Giant Food LLC is backing the Anacostia Watershed Society’s (AWS) yearly Earth Day Cleanup and Celebration, which takes place Saturday, April 9 at Bladensburg Waterfront Park in Bladensburg, Md. For the occasions, dozens of Giant volunteers are joining community members at more than 20 cleanup sites along the shores of the Anacostia River.

To help the effort along, the Ahold USA division is distributing 3,000 reusable bags and providing lunch for cleanup volunteers. Additionally, Giant Food VP of corporate responsibility and sustainability Harriet Hentges will speak at the event.

Since 1989, Bladensburg-based AWS has been dedicated to cleaning the waters, recovering the shoreline, and honoring the heritage of the Anacostia River and its watershed communities in Washington and Maryland. The group’s activities include educational programs, stewardship efforts and advocacy projects.

Based in Landover Md., Giant Food operates 178 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs about 22,000 associates. Included within the 178 stores are 163 full-service pharmacies.
