Giant Eagle's Burgo Transitions to Vice Chairman

PITTSBURGH -- Ray Burgo, who has served as president and c.o.o. of Giant Eagle, Inc. since 1992, has moved into a vice chairman role at the 219-store chain based here.

As vice chairman, Burgo will serve as an advisor for the Giant Eagle executive team, and will assist with a variety of special projects, according to a statement from the company.

A Giant Eagle employee since 1970 when he began his career as a produce manager, Burgo has served in a variety of increasingly responsible roles at the regional supermarket chain, including store manager, produce/deli supervisor, training and employee relations director, v.p., human resources, s.v.p. of retail development and corporate administration and e.v.p.

In his most recent capacity of president and c.o.o., Burgo had responsibility for the overall operations of Giant Eagle, Inc. and its subsidiaries Giant Eagle Markets Co., OK Grocery Co., American Seaway Foods, Aetos Construction Co., Butler Refrigerated Meats, HBC Service Co., and the Tamarkin Co. No further details were available about the impact of Burgo's shift into a vice chairman role, including plans for a successor or successors to his previous posts as president and c.o.o.

Giant Eagle, one of the nation's largest retailers and distributors, has more than $5.2 billion in annual sales and operates 138 corporate and 81 independently owned and operated stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, north central West Virginia, and Maryland.
