Healthy dog and cat food provider Freshpet Inc. recently revealed several changes in its organizational structure designed to enhance its capabilities and support its long-term growth objectives. Specifically, these changes are designed to strengthen the company’s capabilities in production, quality, engineering, logistics and finance. Those leadership changes include:
- CFO Heather Pomerantz has stepped down from her position to pursue other opportunities. While the company searches for her replacement, current Vice Chairman (and previous Freshpet CFO) Dick Kassar has taken the role of interim CFO.
- EVP of Manufacturing Steve Weise, whose intention to retire was revealed previously, will remain with the company in a consulting role through 2023 to support improvements in the company’s quality assurance systems and other components of its manufacturing and supply chain.
- Jay Dahlgren, previously VP of operations at J.M. Smucker Co., is now a consultant to Freshpet, with a focus on mitigating manufacturing and supply chain risks. Dahlgren has a long track record of operations success with Nestlé Purina and Big Heart before his time at J.M. Smucker.
- VP of Manufacturing Ricardo Moreno will be appointed SVP of manufacturing and engineering. Freshpet expects to backfill the VP of manufacturing role as it builds out this important area of its operations.
- SVP of Engineering Michael Hieger will broaden his responsibilities to include all capital expansion projects and engineering resources, and will report to Moreno. Hieger successfully led the creation and construction of Kitchens 1.0 and 2.0 in Bethlehem, Pa., and the startup of Kitchens South.

For its second quarter ended June 30, Freshpet reported net sales of $146.0 million, an increase of 34.4% from last year. Net loss was $20.6 million, compared with prior-year net loss of $7.5 million. Additionally, adjusted EBITDA was $3.9 million for second the quarter, compared with last year’s $10.9 million.
For full-year 2022, the company’s adjusted EBITDA guidance includes net sales of more than $575 million, an increase of approximately 35% from 2021. Adjusted EBITDA during the second half of 2022 is expected to skew heavily to the fourth quarter (an approximate 75/25 split between fourth and third quarters, respectively), due to the combination of increased revenue, supported by the impact of higher pricing and consistent consumption growth, and lower marketing investment.
