Food Lion Debuts ‘Great Pantry Makeover’

To mark Feeding America's Hunger Action Month, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Donation will donate more than 1,200 service hours and 1 million-plus meals through its first-ever "The Great Pantry Makeover" event. During the month-long volunteer service program, Food Lion employees will help out at 38 area food pantries, thereby furthering the grocer’s goal of providing 500 million meals by the end of 2020.

"Giving back to our communities is part of who we are as a company, and something we are just as passionate about as serving our customers in our stores," said Meg Ham, president of Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion. "Hunger Action Month provides a great opportunity for us to celebrate a month of service through The Great Pantry Makeover, so our associates can spend time in our communities remodeling and restocking local food pantries to help them continue to provide food to people who are making tough choices because they’re struggling with hunger."

More Than Meals

The initiative kicked off this week with service projects planned throughout the month. In addition to providing meals, volunteers will paint and clean pantries, install shelving and other donated equipment such as refrigerators and freezers, and stock shelves with food donations.

A company of Delhaize America, the U.S. division of Brussels-based Delhaize Group, Food Lion has more than 1,100 stores in 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, and employs more than 63,000 associates.
