Food Lion Believes ‘Hunger Has a Cure’

Food Lion has launched its 10th annual “Hunger Has a Cure” campaign to support Chicago-based hunger relief organization Feeding America and its local member food banks. The campaign, which enables customers to donate money and canned food and buy ready-made food boxes, runs through Dec. 25.

“Food Lion’s ‘Hunger Has a Cure’ campaign helps alleviate hunger in our communities,” explained Sherrii Webb, community relations manager for Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion, a subsidiary of Delhaize America, the U.S. division of international retail conglomerate Delhaize Group in Brussels. “During our holiday food drive, Food Lion and our customers hope to donate 1 million pounds of food locally, and raise $100,000 during our at-register campaign, to serve local food banks in our communities.”

Available at all Food Lion stores for $4.99 each while supplies last, the food boxes contain five private label products. All stores also have a designated food collection area where shoppers can place the food boxes or other nonperishable items. Customers can additionally make cash donations at the register. All food donations remain within the local community.

So far this year, the grocer has donated more than 29 million pounds of food to local food banks. Since the food drive began in 2002, Hunger Has a Cure has raised more than $7.7 million in food and donations.

Food Lion operates more than 1,100 supermarkets and employs about 58,000 in 11 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states.
