FMI Marketechnics 2003: New Contracts Announced

NEW YORK - As the food industry gears up for FMI's Marketechnics Show taking place Feb. 23-25 in Dallas, several supermarkets have announced plans to sign on with technology providers to address business challenges and beef up their competitive advantage.

Among the agreements announced on Thursday and Friday:

-- Timera Inc. said H. E. Butt Grocery Company (H-E-B) has purchased the Timera Enterprise Workforce Management suite to streamline its entire workforce management operations in the U.S. H-E-B is currently piloting in three stores, and upon completion will begin to roll out to all of its approximately 300 stores.

-- Giant Eagle Inc. is implementing an enterprise back-office solution from Eatec Corp., EatecNetX, to enhance the management of its foodservice operations in 52 supermarkets. Eatec is planning to deploy the solution in an additional 52 stores in the spring of this year.

-- TCI Solutions Inc. announced that Bashas' Inc., the 136-store chain with headquarters in Chandler, Ariz., has selected the company's headquarters and pricing solutions to improve efficiency and provide flexibility in implementing strategic pricing programs. Bashas' will implement TCI Retail HQ, which will provide a corporate technology infrastructure and central data repository for the company's item and vendor information.

-- Shaw's Supermarkets Inc., which first piloted self-checkout in 2000, expects to have self-checkout systems from Atlanta-based NCR Corporation installed in more than 120 stores by year-end. NCR FastLane will be installed in Shaw's Supermarkets and Star Market stores throughout New England. Shaw's currently has NCR FastLane in 52 locations.

-- Retalix USA announced that K-VA-T Food Stores Inc. is in the process of installing Retalix StoreLine POS in all of its 86 Food City stores. The Retalix StoreLine solution has integrated fuel site functionality, which K-VA-T will also use for its existing 30 fuel stations.

The annual Marketechnics show aims to help retailers improve their operation through a better understanding of available and emerging technologies and applications. The show typically draws around 6,000 attendees that include store owners/operators, retailers/wholesalers, senior executives, IT & operations professionals, and marketing and merchandising professionals.
