Dollar General Snaps Up 41 Former Walmart Express Stores
Dollar General Corp. has completed the purchase of 41 former Walmart Express locations in 11 states. The Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based dollar store retailer anticipates relocating 40 existing Dollar General stores to the acquired sites by October and entering one new market, Kansas, as part of the purchase. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
“Dollar General is excited to add these locations to our existing store base,” said Todd Vasos, the company’s CEO. “We look forward to the opportunity to better serve our customers in these communities by continuing to provide the convenience and value they expect from Dollar General.”
The purchased stores will be remodeled to feature the latest Dollar General layout, which incoporates additional sales floor square footage, along with expanded offerings such as fresh meat and produce. Dollar General additionally plans to continue to operate the fuel stations at 37 of the locations.
The stores are located in Alabama (3), Arkansas (2), Florida (1), Georgia (6), Kansas (3), Louisiana (3), Mississippi (5). North Carolina (12), Oklahoma (4), South Carolina (1) and Tennessee (1).
Walmart revealed last January that it was closing 269 stores worldwide, including 102 Walmart Express locations. In June, Springdale, Ark.-based Harps Food Stores purchased nine stores that once operated under the failed banner.
Dollar General operates 12,719 stores in 43 states.
