Dollar General Rebannering Dollar Express Stores
Dollar General will convert a total of 20 Dollar Express stores in the Chicago and St. Louis areas to the Dollar General banner by late fall, according to published reports. The locations are among the 323 stores in 36 states that Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General acquired from New York-based private equity firm Sycamore Partners in April.
The 15 Chicago-area stores are in the Jefferson Park, Vittum Park, East Side, Back of the Yards, Jeffery Manor, Grand Crossing, East Chatham, Edgewater, Little Village, Brighton Park and Portage Park communities, in addition to locations near the border of Chicago and Evanston and in Aurora, Berwyn and Elgin, according to the Chicago Tribune. Five St. Louis Dollar Express stores will also be converted, while two others, in Jennings, Mo., will be relocated, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
The rebannered stores will feature a layout designed to facilitate shopping and employ about six to 10 people, both newspapers noted.
Other areas where conversions of Dollar Express stores to Dollar General locations are reported to be taking place are Charlotte, N.C. (two); Cincinnati (six); Cleveland, Ohio (four); Hampton Roads, Va. (four); St. George, Utah (one); and four in west Michigan, including two in Grand Rapids.
Charlotte, N.C.-based Dollar Express was created in 2015 to address Federal Trade Commission concerns regarding competition when Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar.
