Delaware SuperFresh Reopens, with Adjacent Liquor Store
MONTVALE, N.J. -- The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. said this week that its Rehoboth Beach, Del. SuperFresh store has reopened after an extensive renovation that includes a full-service adjacent liquor store.
It is the first SuperFresh store in the state to receive the banner's new look, which includes a place to buy alcohol right next door. An A&P spokeswoman told Progressive Grocer that four SuperFresh stores in Pennsylvania feature attached state liquor stores, in Yardley, Upper Moreland, Richboro, and Boothwyn.
The reason for the adjacent liquor store in the Delaware store is because state law prohibits supermarkets from selling liquor, so any associated liquor store must be a separate establishment with its own entrance and exit. The spokeswoman said that the Rehoboth SuperFresh liquor store replaced a liquor store in the same strip mall, and is bigger and in a more prime location than the earlier store.
Additionally, the Rehoboth SuperFresh liquor store, which boasts a knowledgeable staff, will host frequent wine tastings and other educational events for shoppers.
Among the other features at the revamped Rehoboth SuperFresh are an extensive assortment of organic and natural products, an eat-in cafe, fresh flowers, and a pharmacy, in addition to such food offerings as artisan breads, gourmet cheeses, hot pizzas, fresh fish and seafood, and sushi.
The supermarket will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while the liquor store's hours are Sunday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11p.m.
A&P, which is in the process of merging with onetime market rival Pathmark, operates 410 stores in nine states and the District of Columbia the A&P, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, SuperFresh, Farmer Jack, Sav-A-Center, and Food Basics banners. There are 80 SuperFresh stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.
