Chanatry's to Expand Meat Department

UTICA, N.Y. - Chanatry's French Road Market here, a feisty one-unit independent that has been profiled as a Progressive Grocer Store of the Month three times, is on the move again, this time expanding and remodeling its meat department.

Twenty feet are being added to the meat department, bringing it to almost 100 linear feet. "I just bought brand new self-service meat cases," owner Bill Chanatry told Progressive Grocer. "Right now we have 32 feet of self-service meat, and I'm making it 52 feet," he said. The extra space is coming from beverage cases, which are being moved from the back wall, where they tied into deli, and moving them up front with the dairy department. "Then we're going to remove our existing 44-foot service case and replace it with a new counter because the old fixtures have taken a hell of a beating," Chanatry said.

Chanatry's, which was last profiled as a Store of the Month in Progressive Grocer's September 2003 issue when it expanded to 50,000 feet through a 10,000-foot addition, has been holding its own against competitors that include Wal-Mart Supercenter, P&C Foods, and Price Chopper.

"The Super Wal-Mart in North Utica is ready to open," Chanatry said. "They took a regular Wal-Mart and expanded it, but that will affect Price Chopper more than me."
