Brown’s ShopRite to Host Community Health Day

Brown’s ShopRite and UpLift Solutions, in association with Chase Bank and Health Partners, will host a Community Health Day on June 23. The event, scheduled to take place at the chain's ShopRite of Cheltenham store in Philadelphia, will showcase the health services UpLift is designing for Philadelphia regional grocery stores and their surrounding communities, including in-store clinics offering convenient and affordable health care access.

Mike Quick, former Philadelphia Eagle and current radio analyst for the team, will be on hand to promote the importance of healthy living. The Community Health Day will provide free health screenings by the Einstein FastCare Clinic and a feature healthy Southern cooking demonstration and samplings by celebrity chef Delilah Winder.

Additionally, Kids Smiles Dental Health, Bravo Health, Coventry Health Care, Gateway Health Plan and the Urban Affairs Coalition will provide information and activities. UpLift would like to expand its supermarket clinic concept throughout the Philadelphia area, a strategy now being studied through a planning grant funded by the William Penn Foundation (WPF). “We believe [the program] will reinforce the notion that the supermarket can be a healthy place for families,” said WPF board chair Janet Haas, M.D. “We expect the program to be of great interest to other communities and entrepreneurs across the nation.”

“We believe the joy of a healthier live is within our grasp, but it will take a team effort among many stakeholders to support the development of innovative solutions.” noted Jeff Brown, president and CEO of Westville, N.J.-based Brown’s ShopRite, a family-owned and -operated supermarket chain of 10 Philadelphia-area ShopRite supermarkets, and chairman of UpLift, the nonprofit organization he founded in 2009. UpLift additionally plans to introduce continuing health and nutrition education, help with electronic applications for public assistance, and creative tools to combat obesity.
