Brookshire’s to Provide 19K Food Boxes for Needy

Brookshire Grocery Co.’s 31st annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive is expected to provide a little more than 19,000 boxes of food for families in need throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods stores and participating service groups and food pantries are involved in the effort.

Volunteers have packed food in boxes provided by the Tyler, Texas-based grocer for distribution before Christmas, along with more than 19,000 coupons for a free roasting hen, also provided by Brookshire’s.

Screened households will receive at least one box of nonperishable food and one coupon, based on family size.

The food drive ran from Nov. 14 through Dec. 19, with Brookshire’s and Super 1 stores setting up collection bins and selling “grab bags” containing Food Club groceries. All contributions to the Spirit of Christmas Food Drive will stay within the community in which they were collected.

“This is our largest annual service project, and we work with a great group of organizations to help neighbors in need,” said Brookshire president and CEO Rick Rayford. “Each year, our store teams do a terrific job of promoting the effort and following through to make the food drive a success in their communities.”

Brookshire estimates that this year's food drive collected donations totaling about 500,000 pounds.
