Big Y Names First Director of Fresh Foods

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Big Y Foods, Inc. here said yesterday that that Michael P. D'Amour has been appointed fresh foods director, a position created to allow the New England grocer to further stress high-quality fresh items.

D'Amour will assume responsibility for sales and marketing for produce, floral, deli, bakery, foodservice, seafood, and meat. As well as creating a long-term fresh foods strategy for Big Y, he will also take charge of all aspects related to those departments, including financials, training and development, merchandising, advertising, and links to operations. D'Amour will report to s.v.p. of merchandising Daniel Lescoe.

Since coming to the company in 1987 as a service clerk in its East Longmeadow supermarket, D'Amour has worked in all areas of the markets, among them grocery, deli, and foodservice. In 1996 he was appointed to deli and foodservice management at the West Springfield Big Y World Class Market, and two years later became a trainer/merchandiser for the chain within the foodservice department. After completing the store manager-training program, he served as assistant store manager at the Manchester, Conn. and then Westfield, Mass. World Class Markets. In 2000 he moved up to store manager in the Rocky Hill, Conn. Big Y, and the next year he opened the new Big Y World Class Market in East Windsor, Conn. D'Amour left the operations team in 2002 to become a category manager for the frozen foods and dairy departments, followed by the same position in the produce department in 2004.

In addition to his Big Y experience, D'Amour has served as a store representative for the former Food Enterprises food broker and worked in food and beverage services at the student center while in college.

Family-owned and -operated Big Y currently operates 54 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts with over 9,000 employees.
