Big Y to Donate 12K Lbs. of Corned Beef

Through a supplier partnership, Big Y World Class Markets will donate 12,000 pounds of Buckley Farms Round Cut Corned Beef to local food banks to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17. By March 12, the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts and Foodshare of Greater Hartford will receive 150 cases, for a total of 300 cases of corned beef to share with their member agencies. In all, about 4,000 packages of corned beef will be donated.

“We support our local food banks daily with donations of both food and transportation services," said Charles L. D’Amour, president and COO of the family-owned New England grocer. “Being able to share a little ‘luck o’ the Irish’ with 4,000 packages of corned beef will help many to enjoy a traditional St. Patrick’s Day celebration.”

Helping Hands

The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts aids more than 300 member agencies, including meal sites, food pantries, homeless shelters, child care centers and elder programs, throughout the region. Foodshare also supports 300-plus member agencies, among them food pantries, community kitchens, homeless shelters and local service agencies, in Connecticut’s Hartford and Tolland counties.

Big Y regularly donates to all food banks within its marketing area: The grocer’s trucks deliver product to local food banks weekly and the company aids many of their programs throughout the year.

One of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England, Springfield, Mass.-based Big Y operates 61 locations throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts with more than 10,000 employees.
