Bi-Lo Rolls Out Storewide Nutrition Tags

The latest grocer to introduce some sort of in-store nutrition guidance system is Bi-Lo, which is unveiling storewide nutritional tags aimed at helping shoppers find with no fuss the foods that meet their dietary needs.

Over the next several weeks, the tags roll out in all of the Mauldin, S.C.-based chain’s stores. Featuring color-coded labels that identify the nutritional benefits of certain foods from a wide range of categories, the tags will be positioned beneath each item’s shelf price sticker.

Bi-Lo registered dietitian Monica Amburn developed the system, which encompasses dairy, frozen products, breads, snacks, vegetables, meats, and some fruits.

Among the attributes that will be called out on the tags are Gluten Free, Organic, Sensible Carbs (products limited in sugars and containing no more than 35 grams of carbohydrates per serving), Heart Healthy, Low Sodium, Whole Grain, Good Source of Fiber, Low Saturated Fat, Good Source of Calcium, Good Source of Vitamin C, and Good Source of Vitamin A.

“Nutritional tags are just one of the many programs Bi--Lo offers its customers to help them create positive habits in leading healthier lifestyles,” observed Amburn. “These tiny additions to our store will help shoppers find foods that are just right for them, whether they are trying to eat healthier or need assistance managing specific health conditions such as diabetes or celiac disease.”

In tandem with the tag rollout, the chain’s pharmacists are offering shoppers free “nutrition tip lists.” Crafted by Amburn, the tip lists help patients to select the right foods throughout the store to better manage their own health conditions, which they can do more easily by making use the in-store tags.

Bi-Lo operates 207 supermarkets in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee, employing about 15,100 people.
