A&P to Host Hurricane Sandy Food Drive

Since there are many in the New York metropolitan area who are still suffering the effects of the massive storm that hit late last year, the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. Inc. (A&P) has formed a partnership with The Salvation Army and area radio station 107.5 WBLS to hold a food drive for Hurricane Sandy victims on Friday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Our company continues to be committed to rebuilding our neighborhoods and our stores,” said Sam Martin, president and CEO of Montvale, N.J.-based A&P. “This joint effort will allow us to better assist those who are still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Sandy.”

The food drive will take place in the parking lots of a Pathmark in Baldwin, N.Y.; a Waldbaum’s in Belle Harbor, N.Y., on the Rockaway Peninsula; a Pathmark in Hackensack, N.J.; and an A&P in South Plainfield, N.J.

Salvation Army trucks will be stationed outside four local stores to collect nonperishable goods from shoppers and to provide immediate relief to those in need. The WBLS promotions team will be on hand to create excitement and publicize the food drive in the store parking lots and on the air.

Donations of the following items are requested: cereals, pasta, pasta sauce, oatmeal, peanut butter, shelf-stable milk or powder milk, rice, canned soups, canned fish/meat, canned vegetables, and canned fruits.

A&P operates more than 300 stores in six states under the following banners: A&P, Best Cellars, Food Basics, The Food Emporium, Pathmark, Superfresh and Waldbaum’s.
