Aldi Sets Its Sights on Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex

BATAVIA, Ill. -- German-based discount chain Aldi, with U.S. headquarters here, plans to open 25 to 35 outlets in the competitive Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex by fall 2009, along with a distribution center to serve the Texas region, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Two sites in Tarrant County have been identified for outlet stores, according to officials with the city of Hurst and a Fort Worth construction company.

The Texas distribution center could supply 50 to 100 stores, said Scott Huska, Aldi's v.p. for Texas and southern Oklahoma. He cited the region's "huge population," adding that "the dynamics of the marketplace are perfect for Aldi."

Wal-Mart has already staked nearly a one-third market share in the Dallas/Fort Worth region, according to the AP.

Aldi's stores average about 17,000 square feet and carry around 800 items. Ninety percent of its selection is private label, according to company officials.

Its expansion in Texas will follow a similar southward push into Florida, where multiple stores are expected to open next year in Tampa and Orlando.
