Albertsons Partners With America's Second Harvest

BOISE, Idaho - Albertsons Inc. on Tuesday said a "virtual food drive" being conducted this month at nearly 900 of its food and drug stores in 18 states, will raise more than one million pounds of food for America's Second Harvest.

The Albertsons program features donation coupons for $5 and $10 packages of nutritious foods. The food selection was created by dietary specialists at America's Second Harvest and Albertsons. Albertsons will deliver the donated food to local America's Second Harvest affiliated foodbanks at the end of the "virtual" food drive.

"As our nation continues to go through tough economic times, the number of Americans feeling the pangs of hunger is increasing," said Larry Johnston, Albertsons chairman and CEO. "We live in the greatest country in the world, yet millions of people are lacking basic foodstuffs -- the fuel necessary to keep themselves and their families healthy, motivated and prepared to weather the difficult economic times and work toward the better days that lay ahead. America's Second Harvest is not going to solve the nation's hunger problem single-handedly, but it is an organization that is making a major contribution toward alleviating the problem."

Albertsons is America's Second Harvest's exclusive partner for the "virtual" campaign. In addition to the foodstuffs obtained from this August program, Albertsons sponsored the Second Harvest national hunger forum -- bringing together leadership from across the country to address the issue of hunger in America. The company has also delivered an additional 15 truckloads of food directly to America's Second Harvest food banks throughout the country. Each truck contained at least 40,000 pounds of food and non-food products.

America's Second Harvest is the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization, with a national network of more than 200 regional food banks and food-rescue programs, serving all 50 states and Puerto Rico. The organization distributes 1.4 billion pounds of donated food and grocery products annually and supports approximately 50,000 local charitable agencies that operate more than 94,000 food programs, including food pantries, soup kitchens, women's shelters, Kids Cafes and community kitchens. More information on the organization is available on its web site, www.secondharvest.org.
