Workers at Grocery Warehouse, Max Foods Reject Contract
DENVER -- Grocery employees at four Denver-area Grocery Warehouse and Max Foods stores turned down parent company Albertsons' contract offer Friday. The mail-in vote was 50 percent against the new contract and 47 percent in favor. The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 in Wheat Ridge said there had been a heavy turnout from among the approximately 250 affected workers.
According to the UFCW, the contract proposal was "about 20 percent worse" than contracts previously accepted by Colorado and Wyoming Kroger, Safeway, and Albertsons workers. The union added that many Grocery Warehouse and Max Foods workers receive as much as two dollars an hour less than their counterparts at major chains.
Grocery Warehouse and Max Foods offer the same products and services as Albertsons, which is based in Boise, Idaho. Albertsons officials were unavailable for comment.
UFCW spokesman Dave Minshall said that the workers' negotiating committee would schedule new negotiating dates with the company.
