Winn-Dixie Reports Increased Second Quarter Sales and Earnings
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Winn-Dixie Stores on Wednesday reported that its second-quarter sales for the 16 weeks ended Jan. 9, 2002, were $4.0 billion, an increase of $6.8 million or 0.2% vs. last year.
Earnings were $42.1 million, an increase of $29.9 million or 246.0% when compared with the same quarter last year. Excluding previous year non-recurring items, earnings for the quarter increased $5.9 million or 16.2% over the same quarter last year.
Al Rowland, Winn-Dixie's president and CEO, stated: "Our action plans are beginning to show results. Net earnings for the quarter were in line with management's expectations, which allowed us to declare and pay a $0.05 per share quarterly cash dividend. We also are pleased to have prepaid, yesterday, $150.0 million of our $398.5 million in bank notes. Our strategy continues to be to drive the top-line growth through fresh product with great people at a good value."
In other news, Winn-Dixie Stores announced today the election of Evan Rainwater as vice president of manufacturing and Victoria Humphrey as vice president of management and organization development.
Before joining Winn-Dixie, Rainwater was with Safeway Supermarkets in Pleasanton, Calif., where he was director of the grocery business unit and previously the director of center for manufacturing excellence. His experience also includes management positions at Rubbermaid and Tucker Housewares. He will be responsible for Winn-Dixie's 19 manufacturing plants. Rainwater reports to Dan Lafever, senior vice president of sales and procurement.
Humphrey was with Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill, N.J., as the director of organizational development for Lucent's communication and software division prior to joining Winn-Dixie. She was also with AT&T Corporation for 23 years in the sales and the human relations departments. She reports to August Toscano, senior vice president of human resources, and will be responsible for strategic organizational planning and leadership development, recruitment and staffing.
