Winn-Dixie Launches Program to Raise Money for Hurricane Victims
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores yesterday set in motion a program in all its stores to solicit donations from shoppers to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. The effort, dubbed "Neighbors Helping Neighbors," will funnel support to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
Winn-Dixie customers are being invited to donate directly to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund at the register, by telling cashiers how much of a donation amount they want to add to their total bill.
Hurricane Katrina affected both Winn-Dixie and its customers, when it hit south Florida on Aug. 25-26, damaging homes and businesses along its path and leaving an estimated 1.5 million residents in Broward, Dade, and Monroe counties without power, and dealing with extensive storm damage. As the hurricane strengthened and then lashed the coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida this week, Winn-Dixie territory was hit once again.
"Our neighbors face a long and difficult recovery process, and we want to do everything we can to help them," said Terry Derreberry, Winn-Dixie director of communications and neighborhood marketing. "As a business leader and members of the community, we at Winn-Dixie value the opportunity to assist the neighborhoods we serve in times of crisis."
