Winn-Dixie, Harris Teeter Giving Flu Shots

Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. and Harris Teeter will both offer flu shots starting Wednesday.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Winn-Dixie’s flu vaccinations will be given on a walk-in basis and through vaccine clinics at all 379 of its in-store pharmacies. Customers who present their Winn-Dixie Customer Reward Card will receive a $5 discount off the $28 flu vaccine.

This year, the grocer’s pharmacies will also dispense a new, high dosage flu vaccine for those 65 and older at a cost of $43 with the Customer Reward Card (a $5 discount). Both the regular and high-dose flu vaccines protect against the H1N1 (“swine flu”) virus.

“Winn-Dixie strives to provide healthy and easy choices for our customers,” said Robin Miller, the company’s director of communications. “Besides the convenience of in-store vaccinations, offering these vaccines at competitive rates will save our customers and their health insurers more than $2 million.”

Certified pharmacists will administer the flu vaccines, and no appointment is necessary. For a list of dates, times and locations of flu clinics, shoppers can visit and type in their city and state or ZIP code.

The Southeastern grocer, which operates 514 stores in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi, is additionally providing an off-site clinic service for area businesses to boost 2010 vaccination rates.

Flu shots will be available to all Harris Teeter customers for $25 each with their VIC card, or free if they are Medicare Part B, non-HMO recipients. This year, for the first time, is the option for the clinic nurse to bill insurances directly; all shoppers need do is ask whether your provider is included. The pneumococcal vaccine will also be available for $60.

Registered nurses employed by Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Mollen will give the shots in temporary clinics set up within Harris Teeter stores. Clinic information will be posted at the entrance to all stores as well as online.
