Winn-Dixie Considers Warehouse Stores in Atlanta

ATLANTA - Winn-Dixie may turn at least some of its 40 metro Atlanta locations into Save Rite warehouse stores as Cub Foods closes its Georgia stores, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently reported.

The newspaper said Winn-Dixie spokesman G.E. "Mickey" Clerc Jr. confirmed the chain is scouting locations in the area, including existing Winn-Dixie stores, for Save Rite, also owned by the chain. Clerc said the company hasn?t decided which stores will be affected.

Winn-Dixie has been competing with Kroger and Publix in recent years for more share of the Atlanta market. Winn-Dixie used to be the No. 3 area grocer. The chain now ranks No. 5 in sales volume and market share behind Wal-Mart, Ingles, Publix and Kroger, according to the grocery trade publication Shelby Report of the Southeast.
