Winn-Dixie Bows New Reusable Bag on Earth Day

Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. has debuted the latest entry in its line of durable, reusable bags in honor of Earth Day, which this year falls on April 22. Crafted from 95 percent recycled material, the new bag features Microban technology, which actively protects the item from stain- and odor-causing bacteria, continuously stops the growth of new bacteria, and won’t wash off or wear away. The grocer says it’s the first retailer in the Southeast to offer a bag with Microban.

Decorated with Earth Day designs created by the children of Winn-Dixie employees, the bag holds the same amount of groceries as three plastic grocery bags and is available at all store locations with a special promotion of five bags for $5. A new baby-themed reusable bag, also featuring Microban, is now on sale, too.

Other green initiatives by the Jacksonville, Fla.-based grocer include reducing energy use and recycling. The company recently earned the Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Certification at its new Covington, La., store, making the location one of just 26 supermarkets in the whole country to qualify for the distinction.

“We are committed to increasing and enhancing our sustainability efforts in every area of our operation,” noted Robin Miller, Winn-Dixie’s director of communications. “Our customers and our associates are passionate about the environment and very supportive of our programs and initiatives. It’s all part of being a good neighbor on both a local and global level.”

Additionally, for customers who want to find out more about living a sustainable lifestyle, Winn-Dixie publishes Organics & Naturals magazine. The free publication is available in all of the grocer’s stores, as well as online at www.winndixie-digital.com/winndixie/2010spring#pg1.

Winn-Dixie operates 515 retail grocery locations, including over 400 in-store pharmacies, in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi.
