Weis Opens Replacement Superstore

Weis Markets held the grand opening for its 63,000-square-foot replacement superstore in West Lawn (Berks County), Pa., on Sunday.

The new store, at 1112 Wyomissing Blvd., will feature Weis Markets’ newest store design, which offers expansive perishable departments and a center store with increased variety and selection. The store will also have a pharmacy and gas station.

“Our grand opening marks the launch of our newest store design,” said David Hepfinger, Weis president and CEO. “It offers a tremendous range of options and improved convenience. We’ve also worked to reduce our store’s overall impact on the environment. Later this summer, we will open two additional stores with this new design.”

This store will utilize advanced refrigeration and climate control technologies designed to lessen its impact on the environment. These technologies will reduce the store’s refrigerant usage by 50 percent compared to a conventional supermarket. It will also feature a number of energy reducing technologies, including solar/thermal rated windows and reflective roofs and skylights for natural lighting.

As part of the grand opening, Weis is donating $28,000 to five local charities, including $15,000 to the Greater Berks Food Bank, $10,000 to St. Joseph’s Medical Center for a women’s cardiac health program and individual donations of $1,000 to the Spring Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Spring Township Library and Spring Township’s Little League.

Founded in 1912, Weis Markets operates 162 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and West Virginia.
