Weis Markets Sets Emissions Reduction Goal
Weis Markets is using the occasion of America Recycles Day on Nov. 15 as an opportunity for pledging to reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020.
Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis is asking all of its 18,000 associates to sign the “20% by 2020” pledge, acknowledging the company is committed to sustainability practices that minimize its impact on the environment.
With the pledge, the company hopes to increase its recycling rate by 5 percent each year with a goal of zero waste; reduce energy usage by 2 percent each year; and replace 50 percent of its tractor fleet with cleaner fuel vehicles within three years. Weis currently boasts a 52 percent recycling rate.
“We are confident that the steps we are taking today will continue to minimize our impact on the environment,” said Patti Olenick, sustainability manager for Weis. “We continue to adopt sustainable practices that will help us reach the goal of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 percent over the next five years.”
Weis Markets operates 163 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.
