Weis Markets Completes Deal for 11 Southern N.Y. Stores

Weis Markets, Inc. has closed on its previously announced purchase of 11 Giant Markets’ stores located in Broome County, N.Y., including units in Binghamton, Vestal, Endicott, Endwell and Johnson City. All of the stores, which closed on Sunday evening for conversion, will reopen this morning at 7 a.m. The Sunbury, Pa.-based regional retailer said it would hold grand-opening celebrations next week for the stores, five of which will transition to a 24-hour schedule.

“We have completed our acquisition on schedule and are acquiring a group of stores with a strong market presence in the Southern Tier,” said Weis Markets’ vice chairman Jonathan Weis. “For more than 70 years, Giant Markets has excelled at being a locally focused retailer. We will build on these strengths and are extremely pleased to welcome nearly 1,000 former Giant Markets associates to our company. They have helped their stores achieve an excellent reputation for taking care of their customers.”

Weis Markets announced in May that it had planned to acquire the Giant stores for an undisclosed sum. Weis already has 154 stores in five states: New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia.
