Weis Markets Closing Two Stores
SUNBURY, Pa. - Weis Markets here will reportedly close two stores here Sept. 16, both of which are considered too small to justify the necessary investments to upgrade them.
A Weis spokesman was quoted in a local press report as saying the leases are expiring on stores on Grape Street in Whitehall Township and at 1856 Catasauqua Rd. in Hanover Township. The chain, which has aggressively expanded and remodeling a significant number of its stores in recent years, prefers locations ranging in size from 52,000- to 65,000-square-feet, the spokesman said, adding that both stores fall just short of that range.
Employees at both stores will be offered jobs at other area Weis locations.
Weis Markets Inc. operates 158 stores in five states: Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York; and West Virginia, where it now operates two stores. Weis Markets also owns SuperPetz, a pet supply superstore chain with 31 locations in ten states.
