Wegmans, YMCA Produce Brochure on Healthy Eating

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans and the YMCA here have joined together to produce a booklet to help parents give their children healthier eating options.

Called "Eat well. Live well. Snack with the Power of 3s," the brochure is the result of a collaboration between Wegmans' corporate nutrition manager Jane Andrews and YMCA's consulting dietitian Trish Kazacos, a mother of small children herself.

The supermarket chain's v.p. of consumer affairs, Mary Ellen Burris, described the program in a recent online column. Burris said the pamphlet advises parents to wait no more than three hours between meals and snacks, and to avoid letting their children eat too much at once or wait too long between meals. It suggests that parents employ "the three-hour rule," so as to enable kids to be energized, but not overloaded.

The number three also figures in the foods children should eat. The YMCA's Kazacos refers to it as the "Power of 3s," as in three whole grains, three colors in fruits and vegetables, and three dairy servings. The simple, inexpensive meal ideas provided are summed up by some of the brochure's section captions: Grab and Go, Mix It Up, Layer It, Dip In, and Roll 'Em.

Wegmans it is disseminated the booklet at its store's consumer information racks and back-to-school displays in general merchandise. It is also available online.
