Wegmans Ventures Further into D.C. Market

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. here reportedly is in talks to open a store in Columbia, Md. in Howard County, which would make it the second high-end grocer to enter the area. Harris Teeter is already planning to begin construction on a store in Columbia this summer. The Wegmans unit would most likely open in 2008.

Meanwhile, Chicago-based mall developer General Growth Properties, Inc. said Trader Joe's is in early negotiations to open a store in the area as well.

Wegmans, celebrated for product selection and customer service in its core Northeast market, has recently begun expanding into the Washington, D.C. metro area with a location in Hunt Valley, Md. and two in the Virginia suburbs.

Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale confirmed to the Washington Post that the grocer was "looking for sites in Howard County," but declined to give further details.
