Wegmans School of Pharmacy Dedicated
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Wegmans School of Pharmacy at St. John Fisher College here was dedicated this week, with members of the Wegman family in attendance. The pharmacy school, which opened for the current semester with an inaugural class of 55, was funded by a $5 million gift from the late Robert Wegman, grocer and noted area philanthropist.
The school, the first of its kind in Monroe County and the fifth in the state, was established to ease a projected shortage of qualified pharmacists for communities and hospitals in the central and western areas of New York.
The 37,500-square-foot building features classrooms, laboratories, a drug information room, study group meeting rooms, faculty and staff offices, and common areas. Students were selected from an applicant pool of over 200 from 22 states.
"Robert Wegman -- community leader, benefactor and visionary -- was devoted to Catholic education and to Rochester," said St. John Fisher College president Donald Bain in a statement. "Through his leadership gift to the college, he paved the way for future generations of pharmacists to serve our community."
