Wegmans Said Rolling Out 11 Stores in 5 States

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets here reportedly has 11 stores in various stages of development that are scheduled to open in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, and New York.

This week the retailer submitted an application for site plan approval to construct a 160,000-square-foot store in Columbia, Md., which, if given the go-ahead, would open in 2009. Wegmans said it also planned one 140,000-square-foot store each in the state's Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported. The opening date of another Maryland store, in Frederick, has yet to be determined.

The grocer is additionally set to open a store in the Harrisburg, Pa., area in Cumberland County on Sept. 16. Wegmans is currently building a 130,000-square-foot store in the Philadelphia suburb of Malvern, Pa.

In Virginia, Wegmans plans to open a store in Woodbridge during the second quarter of 2008, while it has not yet determined opening dates for other future stores in Leesburg and Lake Manassas.

A store in Turnersville, N.J. has been put on hold for future consideration, the newspaper said.

Closer to its home, Wegmans has a replacement store in Greece, N.Y., which succeeds a location that was over 40 years old, slated to bow this July.
