Wegmans Rolls Out Season’s First Shipment of Wild-caught Salmon

Select Wegmans supermarkets last week began selling their first wild-caught Alaska salmon of the season. The Rochester, N.Y.-based upscale supermarket received its first shipment of fresh sockeye salmon caught in the pristine waters of the Copper River and sustainably managed as mandated by the state of Alaska.

“The salmon return to their native waters after spending their lives in the open ocean,” said Carl Salamone, VP, seafood. “This strenuous journey requires a higher oil content in the fish, resulting in a rich, flavorful, unforgettable dining experience for our customers.”

At this time, 34 of Wegmans’ 75 stores are carrying the first fish from this year’s season. If the season goes well for fishermen and there’s adequate supply, more stores will receive the fresh fillets.

This is just the beginning of the wild-caught salmon season. Copper River king salmon, Yukon River ketta salmon, and coho salmon from a variety of locations are slated to arrive in the coming months.
