Wegmans Raises $1.7 Million for Hunger Relief
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets here raised a total of $1,684,713 in customer and employee donations through the "Check Out Hunger" and "Care About Hunger" campaigns.
The program lets shoppers donate $2, $3, or $5 at checkout, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to each store's local food bank.
Wegmans' 2006 fall campaign, held in New Jersey, Virginia, and some Eastern Pennsylvania stores, raised $420,053, while the rest of the grocer's stores (in Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Southern Tier, Hunt Valley, Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Williamsport, and State College) run a winter campaign, which ended Feb. 24 and raised $1,264,660.
Since 1993, Wegmans has raised almost $9 million to combat hunger.
"Teamwork in our stores and the generosity of our customers and employees made these results possible," noted Wegmans community relations manager Linda Lovejoy in a statement. "Our food banks rely on this money for emergency food services, and they know they can count on Wegmans. This is truly an example of making a difference in our communities."
The retailer also donates about 14 million pounds of food annually to local food banks.
Wegmans operates 71 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.
