Wegmans Provides Regional Flood Relief
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. here said it is accepting customer contributions to aid flood victims in Pennsylvania and New York State's Southern Tier via a checkout donation program that began July 8, installed in its stores closest to the affected areas.
Wegmans stores participating in the program are in Johnson City, Elmira, Ithaca, and Corning, N.Y.; and Allentown, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Downingtown, State College, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre, and Scranton, Pa.
Customers can contribute any amount they choose. In Pennsylvania, 100 percent of donations will go to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief for 2006 Flood Victims in Pennsylvania. In New York, all money donated will be split evenly among Catholic Charities, CHOW food pantry, and the Salvation Army.
The donation program will run through July 22, in Wegmans' Pennsylvania stores; but because of the severity of the flooding in the Binghamton, N.Y. area, the New York state program will run until July 29, the company said.
Wegmans has already contributed food and water totaling $100,000 toward flood relief in New York, Pennsylvania, and parts of New Jersey. In response to the disaster, the company's stores contributed food, hot meals, and water for victims and volunteers. Additionally, the retailer dispatched a truckload each of water and food to Johnson City and to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
"We were fortunate our stores were not flooded, and we were able to stay open, allowing our employees to offer immediate help," said Wegmans community relations manager Linda Lovejoy in a statement. "Now that we see the full extent of the damage, we know more help will be needed over the next several months. This is a way for those whose homes were not damaged to help their neighbors in need."
Family-owned Wegmans operates 71 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.
