Wegmans Hiring for New Mass. Store

Wegmans Food Markets Inc. will begin filling 400 part-time jobs at a 138,000-square-foot store planned to open Sunday, Oct. 16 in the Northborough Crossing development in Northborough, Mass. The Rochester, N.Y.-based grocer is accepting applications online.

Hiring for full-time positions began earlier this year and is still going on. “We've received nearly 3,500 applications so far, and I must say, the quality of the applicants has been excellent,” noted Northborough store manager Kevin Russell. “I’d encourage anyone seeking a full-time or part-time job to apply right away, because there are about 100 full-time positions left to fill and 400 part-time.”

According to Russell, people are eager to work for Wegmans because of its inclusion on FORTUNE magazine's list of “The 100 Best Companies to Work For” for 14 straight years.” They want to be part of a company that puts employees first, provides growth opportunities, and offers flexibility to balance life and work,” he said.

The reason for hiring so far in advance so that associates can receive training, Russell added. “Our new employees receive some of the most in-depth product, service and culinary education in the industry,” he explained. “Instruction ranges from computer-based food safety and allergen awareness training to experiential learning on-the-job in such areas as cheese, seafood, bakery, produce, meat, and prepared foods. Wegmans will spend $2.9 million on training alone before the Northborough store even opens its doors.”

The company also allows both part-time and full-time workers to take part in its Employee Scholarship Program. Since the initiative began in 1984, more than 25,000 Wegmans associates have been awarded scholarships totaling $81 million.

Family-owned Wegmans operates 78 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland. The Northborough store will be its first in the state of Massachusetts.
