Wegmans to Close Smallest Rochester-area Store
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans here said it would close its smallest store in its home market here by May 1, citing such reasons as an 11 percent decrease in sales last year and the location's comparatively small 42,000-square-foot size.
The store's 120 associates, 80 of whom are part-timers, will be offered jobs at other Wegmans locations, company spokeswoman Jo Natale told the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
The timing of the store's closing was in part related to the pending opening of a Wegmans store in Greece, N.Y. this summer, the grocer said, adding that some associates from Driving Park will be employed at the new store.
Nearby Wegmans stores in Irondequit and Gates, N.Y. are expected to absorb Driving Park shoppers. Other retailers in the area include four Tops Markets and an Aldi.
Wegmans has talked with Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy about possibly turning the Driving Park store into a youth center, Natale told the local newspaper.
The city of Rochester's one remaining Wegmans, on East Avenue, will in coming years be replaced by a newer store, according to an article on a local television station's Web site.
